You're reading If I got married by justice of the peace in one state a few years ago and wanted to get married in a church ceremony in another state, is it possible to obtain 2 separate marriage certificates and/or licenses from 2 separate states without anyone knowing?
Comments
Is this person planning on re-marrying the person they are already married to? It sounds like they just want to collect wedding presents from this church marriage and want to hide the fact that they are already legally married.

Aaahh....I didn't even think of that possibility. I assumed he/she was trying to keep the secret from his/her prospective spouse (assuming it was a new one). Good point!
Hey Anonymous - what's your story? If you're marrying the same person twice - I don't know how anyone else would find out as usually it's only you and your spouse who apply for the license. The certificate you receive wouldn't state how many times you've been married.

It's just my thought that she may not want to get "busted" at the clerk's office when she applies for a second marriage license when she is already married in another state years earlier. Some questions are just not 100 percent clear and are open to varied interpretations. No harm meant on your end.

it is to the same person, we got engaged few years ago and got married (he is in the military) and didnt tell anyone and we have been planning the "real wedding" in a different state. scared to tell priest and family. We just want to know if we can apply for another marriage license in a different state..or what to do..

I think you can definitely do this then although your guilty conscience might get the best of you!

I think there are worse things that a person can do than get married in two different states to the same person. Look, she wanted to make sure no one else got her man and she wanted to have sanctioned sex in the eyes of God. She deserves a big party and presents as far as I can tell. Do they ask for your social security number when you get a marriage license... geez, it's been 20 yeasr and I don't remember and things could have changed.

I didn't mean it as a slight towards her - I said it because it sounds like they are already stressing about the priest and their family finding out. Sometimes when people are really worried about something that they are trying to keep a secret - they crack under the pressure. I wasn't passing judgement at all.
Anyways, yes I do believe they ask for your social security number but since many people renew their vows, I didn't think that would be an issue. Unless the trick is how to get a new marriage certificate - maybe they can't and would then have to explain that to the priest.
The other option of course would be to come clean with everyone, I'm sure they'd all still love to see you have a real wedding.
