You're reading Does anyone know what " unmountable boot volume" is on your computer. I have Windows Xp and I get a blue screen at startup with this across it. It will not go any further than the blue screen.

I'm a bit confused about the 40 pin connector. What type of plug is this? I tried to boot with the reinstallation disk but it continued to go to the blue screen.

The 40 pin connector cable they talk about is the EIDE cable (large, flat and grey) that connects the harddrive to the mainboard. The 80 pin connector cable looks similar - it just uses twice as many wires. In any case, I wouldn't worry too much about that - it is rarely the problem.
It sounds like you are still booting from the harddrive and not the CD. You may have to check your BIOS settings (setup when the computer is first turned on, usually accessed by hitting the F1, F2, or DEL key) and change the Boot Order sequence so that you can boot from a CD before booting from the harddrive.
