No matter how old they are the trees the forests consist of are actually deposits of carbon absorbed from the air.
As long as there are live or even dead trees in a forest no matter how old or new, there will be the activity of separating the carbon from from carbon dioxide, storage of the carbon and release of the remaining oxygen into the air.
So forets regardless their age are not carbon neutral.

They are just carbon, stolen from the atmosphere and packed into the ground....no neutral or non-neutral about it.

Hey! We have a chance to return all that carbon to it's original source!
