I don't think it was so much a thing of lying. Instead, looking back, I think there were two big factors that could have been much different (and better): 1) School and education turned out to be two different things. Instead of an emphasis on learning HOW TO THINK, too often the emphasis was being given a subset of themed facts to memorize then spit back. 2) While I don't think anyone tried to teach overt "lies", I definately think there were many sins of omission .. and thus .. students came away with ideas and notions based on only a part of the "truth". If lucky, both of those can be rectified in life .. by design and personal decision. But it's identical to seeing poor people and deciding to either hand over a crate of fish or teach someone how to fish. The latter is preferred. That crate of fish wasn't unhealthy or anything .. just not up to the bigger task and goal of what "could be". Um .. did I answer your question? Not an overt lie. But a lie in the sense of false impressions by teaching only parts of the story (the facts part). Then, compounded by not showing us how to assess and weigh and make intellectual judgements ABOUT what facts we can learn.
