  • According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_(planet)#Orbit_and_rotation , "Mercury has the most eccentric orbit of all the planets; its eccentricity is 0.21 with its distance from the Sun ranging from 46 to 70 million kilometers."
  • It has been theorized by some that Mercury may not really be a planetoid at all, rather a moon or asteroid. Thus it's eccentricity was because of the solar capture, along with it's original trajectory. I don't know if this is still the current thinking however.
