There are no hard and fast rules about what constitutes a 'small' or 'midsize' truck.

Back in the day, the Japanese-brand trucks (Toyota, Nissan, Mazda) along with the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, were considered the 'small' trucks.

The Dodge Dakota was considered 'mid-size' because it was bigger than the 'small' trucks but not as big as the full-size ones (Ford F-series, Chevy Silverado, etc.)

Over time, the 'small' pickups have become progressively larger. I own a '96 Tacoma extended-cab and it gets *dwarfed* by the newer versions.

About the only 'small' pickup left is the Ford Ranger (or its identical twin Mazda B-Series). Everything else ranges from 'mid-size' to 'gargantuan'.
