Why did Christine leave the Phantom?(I'm talking about Phantom Of The Opera if you haven't figured it out already)

    If you read the original book by Gaston Leroux, it shows that Christine was never really in love with the phantom. She was only entranced by him because she thought he was the angel of music her father promised to send her after he died. That was the only reason she had any real loyalty to him. She wound up falling in love with Raoul because they had been childhood sweethearts and she found freedom with him that she had never felt while she was appeasing the phantom. In the end, the phantom got jealous because he knew Christine never really loved him, and she never would.

    Because (and I'm basing this on the movie, I have not seen the original musical, my Mum is the real expert), Raul was her childhood sweetheart, she was in love with him and he with her.

    The Phantom had an ability to bring out the best in her singing voice and had a mystical presence that she was drawn to, and felt sorry for him when he was revealed, but any love for him was outweighed by the atrocities he committed against others.

    So basically Raul was the good guy, the Phantom was the bad guy that she was also drawn to, but ultimately she chose her childhood sweetheart and suitor.

    PS my Mum says she made such a bad decision!

    the phantom only had her mind, he seduced her in a way, but raoul had her heart. the whole play/movie/book is a tragedy about a deformed man who is in love with a girl, who is already in love with amother. people need to get over the fact that she went with raoul, you cant change it. she WAS in love with a man who was unselfish, whos every action was to protect her, and who loved her for who she was as a person and not only for her voice as the phantom did.

    welll i just watched this movie, and started to ponder it deeply.

    I think she really did love the phantom at the beginning. & i think she would of continued if he would have shown his face to her, and not pushed her away, when she tried to see it.

    He started having hate and being selfishh, he thought that if he gave her everything, (fame.. good voice ect.) He should have her love in RETURN. He expected something. and thats not love. its "selfish love" And yes, it is a form of love, but not one the other would be attracted to. He became a control freak,
    He wouldnt let her leave the building or even see raoul.

    & at the end he showed no compassion when he was trying to hang raoul, And as she said when she was singing her tears of sadness turned to tears of hate,

    She Would have been lying to herself if she would of went with the phantom.

    So my way of looking at it, if the phantom would of showed himself, and not became a control freak she would have loved him, But not meaning to he pushed her away.
