I would guess for several reasons; The symbolic significance of the colour. Red is a powerful colour. It exudes energy, confidence and bravery. Can strike fear into the enemy. Red is conspicuous on the battlefield. Friend and enemy can spot him easily so friends can follow his lead. His willingness to make himself an easy target proves his bravery and inspires his men. When he is wounded the red shirt camouflages his blood so that the enemy is not encouraged and his men are not disheartened.
