Question

I have four goldfish who seem to be constantly swimming at the surface of the tank - they look like they are trying to feed. Does anyone know why they might be doing this (they are fed regularly!)?

It sounds like they are lacking oxygen and are coming up to the surface to get some. Yes, I know it sounds strange because fish breathe through their gills, but if there isn't enough oxygen in the water they need to get it from the surface. Do you have a pump in your tank? They are used for this reason - to oxygenate the water in the tank. They are not very expensive and very easy to install - but I think you need one.

buy a second air pump, and attach it to 2 air stones (minimum of 4" long each), this will add more oxygen to your tank, and should solve the problem. Air stones work best, if they are allowed a separate air pump just for them.

I have got a pump (it's a Juwel 60 tank complete with pump. I have changed all the filters as directed. How can I test if the water is lacking oxygen?
