Pick up a pencil or pen. Mr Bill

come up with a plot, characters, and do background research. then start writing - it doesn't have to be perfect the first time around.

Think it's different paths depending on one basic "is it fiction or non-fiction" first. Then, follow the path for one or the other. Also two other basics: 1) Decide. Say "I am writing a book", not "I'm going to". 2) Set your schedule (life) accordingly. If you have no set time to write, you're not yet writing your first book or any other book. After those things, can get into the myriad ways any writer approaches a writing project. But without those things, nothing is possible. Time enough later to talk of "just write" or "do you outline first or free write" or when to research vs write ... when to plot things out vs write and discover .. and all those things. In all - no matter the steps - it's all DRAFT time. Not censored. Not stopped midway and "fixed". It's GET IT WRITTEN front to back cover time. MUCH later, time enough to cut, chop, change, re-arrange, go back to fill in, ie .. craft it into your book!! Are you writing a book?

Have an understanding on what you're writing about and start a roughdraft.

it just comes natural to me i can write a book out of the blue not really thinking ahead of time, i think as i go.

Personally - the story comes to me first, usually as a few "what if..." questions. The characters come next...the setting, and then the tone, etc. I try as much as possible not to plot out my books, instead I let the main characters figure their own way out.

Looking back now, I'd say an outline. I jumped in and as I was writing it, found I had to keep going back to different areas to look stuff up. Very time consuming. It would've been much easier locating the information that I needed with an outline. But such is life. If this is something you plan on doing: Good luck and I hope it works out well for you.

Sitting down, and turning on the typewriter/wordprocessor and typing the first word. Anything before that is wishful thinking or idle talk.
