Why isn't the US taken seriously by Canada?
My all-time favorite description of Canada was by Robin Williams, which went something like this:
Living in Canada is like living in the apartment above a really hopping, hip club, but you're not invited.
Heck, I love you guys! I live about 90 miles from the U.S.-Canadian border in upstate NY and I've always said I would move to Canada if the U.S. continues to become right-wing. :-)
Hopefully we've seen that trend come to a halt with the election of Obama, but it remains to be seen.
Because most of them don't even realise we exist.
That's what the US wants you to think. Canada is a rich country, my friend - our borders are vast. Our standard of living is one of the world's best and we do have the world's love and respect. We were the first in line to defend democracy in both World Wars and our peacekeeping troops are reknown. With Obama onboard, we know the US will take Canada seriously....just maybe you don't.
Because the US, in general (no offense meant to the citizens, just their government) bases their opinions on war. Canada has a reputation as a peaceful country. Little do they know...
Who doesn't take Canada seriously. And what do you want America to take seriously about Canada? Loving that oil from Alberta, though.
Because Canada is ruled by the Great Brown Bear of the Northern Wastes, and the US does not consort with ursids.
The USA very rightly, knows better than to mess with Canada. On the two occasions, during the revolution and the War of 1812, they have been unable to achieve their military ambitions there.
The Queen of Canada is also the Queen of England and Americans would rather try to forget that despite their best efforts, the Monarchy still has influence in north america.
This is why they dismiss Canada, because to think of i in serious terms and as a country rich in resources, is just a testament to their failure to get their grubby hands on it.
You asking about the goverment ,the people, or your perception? Myself, as one of the people have no problems with Canada, their goverment or their people. I'm not sure what I need to do to take it seriously. If you are speaking of the citzens - I cannot speak for others. If the question is in reference to our goverments I believe there is an impression that we as in the USA has an big dog on the porch attitude and shows little respect for other countries and not just Canada. Our present adminstration may have something to do with that.
I didn't realize that they didn't!
They aren't a threat to Canada. If there were more population, they may be taken more seriously.
Its not that Canada is not taken seriously, both country's are such good freinds that we are not a threat to one another.
Its like two people who live next to each other, we borrow from each other, and if the nabor's dog goes into the yard than the other's nabiors don't mind.
