Help answer this question below.

I just received a new DVD. The disc plays fine on my computer, but when I try to play it on my Emerson EWD2202 DVD player, it only jumps from Title 3 Ch 1 to Title 3 Ch 2 with a blank screen without playing anything. Other DVDs play fine. What's wrong?

    There is a chance the problem lies in your DVD player, but it is most likely a problem with the disk itself. The DVD is probably a borderline case - not bad enough to reject, but enough out of tolerance to be played properly on your DVD player. If cleaning the lens on your DVD player does not correct the problem, take the DVD back to the retailer it was purchased from and exchange it for another.

    Computer DVD and CD recorders / players tend to be made to very loose tolerances. This means they can play disks that a standalone player might reject, but computer recorders will create more disks that are out of tolerance (i.e., coasters). Always use a slow recording speed with CD media (e.g., 4x or 8x) and the slowest recording speed with DVD media.

    If the DVD is a DualDisc, with a CD layer on one side and a DVD layer on the other, it may not be compatible with your DVD player. For example, my two high-end CD players will not play the CD layer on DualDiscs. (The transport in one of them makes quite nasty noises when you try.) If it is a DualDisc, you may have to make both a DVD and a CD copy using a computer drive to make it compatible with stand-alone DVD and CD players. Since the DualDisc format is a non-standard kludge, it is best to avoid them.
