  • I do not trust any oil that changes every 20,000 miles. engines normally give off pieces of tiny metal, which is caught in the oil and hopefully caught in the oil filter. 20,000 miles will break down the viscosity of the oil or its ability to protect your engine from excessive wear by parts rubbing together. I have used Castrol 5w-30 since day one in my camry solora. i change the oil every 6,000 miles. Bottom line is this, if a person believes and trusts 20,000 miles between oil changes, then i hope this person carries a four leaf clover with them on the interstate. they will need it.
  • If you are going to keep your car for awhile and you live in hot or cold climate you would want to use a motor oil that can last 20,00 miles or more. The only oil that does that is a synthetic oil. Check out Amsoil's web site. You replace the filter to keep the oil clean from metal particles, blow-by particles, etc. I replace my oil filter every 3,000 miles. I have not changed the oil for 30,000 miles. I just add oil after the filter change. Remember, oil companies are in the business of selling oil.
  • I think that one would want to change their ol much more often than that - to get rid of everything that builds up in oil during normal use. I change my oil every 3,000 miles, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Having 20,000 mile oil seems pointless to me, I can understand changing out the filter frequently, but how expensive is oil that you can't change it out as well?
