To me it sounds insulting, because it i implying gay people, who are not "straight", are crooked/wrong.

I think it's because they're "straight laced." Meaning no deviation from the norm.

Its my guess it its related to following the mainstream, the straight path. As one who gets out of prison and follows the regular lifestyle - "going straight".

5-20-2017 It's not straight, it's strait. It means strict. About the only reason the word is still remembered is that it appears in the bible. Matthew 7:14 "Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." We also have the phrase "dire straits": a strait is a narrow sea channel or a difficult situation. Strait and strict both come from the same Latin word.
