The execution wasn't painful enough. Too quick and simple, should have been made to suffer more.

Needed to be done now because awaiting a second trial would only increase the tensions and animosities in Iraq, and make a further mockery of the Iraqi Court System. The question now is whether US forces, and the Iraqi government, can weather the inevitable and upcoming backlash for the next couple of months. If they do, Saddam may become "old news" and the forgotten martyr.

Of course, that's not to say that the "sectarian violence" will end - that will remain so long as US forces remain in Iraq, but at the very least the Iraqi people can begin to move forward in their political landscape. With Saddam gone, at least his death will put an end for calls to restore him back to power. The pro-Saddam insurgents have lost their leader and now have to go in entirely different directions in terms of what they want for their country. What direction that will take is difficult to predict. It could very well lead to more violence and bloodshed, and provide the insurgency with more fuel to the fire in labelling the new Iraqi government as American puppets. On the other hand, Saddam's death may help to legitimize the Iraqi government, by showing the people their judicial system does have conquences, and is committed to human rights, justice, and law & order.

Personally, though, I think that justice was served because Saddam was clearly guilty of crimes against humanity with the 1982 Shiite killings, & the chemical attacks on Iranians & Kurds in the late 80s. And many new agencies so far have neglected to mention the gross environmental crimes Saddam was guilty of also - shortly after the First Gulf War Saddam, almost in a pouting rage after being kicked out of Kuwait, Saddam ordered the burning of the Kuwait oil fields and released tonnes of oil into the Persian Gulf, one of the worst and certainly most blatant envionmental crimes in world history.

Should have been on the tele. I dont think I will lose any sleep over it. I think they should have shot him in the hole they found him in and covered it with concrete.

although one of the more deserving people on earth, I am against capital punishment and would have liked to see him serve a life sentence more.

Anyone want to bet that there will soon be a conspiracy theory that says something like one of Saddam's body doubles was executed and Saddam got away or some nonsense like that.

Edit: never mind blessings is already starting the conspiracy theory. I guess I win!

    AWWW SNAP!

What's there to think about? He's dead. That's what executions do.
What do I think about the ramifications? Apprehensive about reprisals is about it. His death didn't change anything politically in Iraq it just heightened emotions on all sides. Is it a deterrent? Well, there is a precedent of dictators dying early and violently anyway in most cases and not by the hangman. I think it's a prerequisite for the job that meglomaniacs seem to ignore.
Who should have been hung with him if I actually believed in capital punishment?
The people that gave him the tools to grab power and pulled his strings, namely the guys in the CIA that handed him the country many years ago, that started the whole mess. It's a little ironic don't you think? Ahhh...well there's always that little turban head Bin Ladden next. Ohh wait...we've been down that road and oddly enough, the same group of guys pop up. Fair is fair, they should swing too.

Personally, I abhor capital punishment, but haven't found myself overly upset by his execution.

I don't believe that anyone's interests are ultimately served by killing, regardless of what they've done or might do. There are far better and more productive means of going about doing things. Death penalties are just quick and dirty ways of dealing with the least pleasant of those among us on Earth.

This being said, I'm somewhat ambivalent towards this particular killing. He surely was a very bad man and did horrendous and inhumane things, but two wrongs do not make right.

I just wish I was firmer in my resolve in this instance for Saddam Hussein.

Beyond all of this, I feel that the trial, or what we saw of it, was a farce in a legal stance, but who can really speak to just what "legal" environment exists in Iraq now. His execution now is really just "showmanship", but for whom? I don't mean to speak about conspiracies, but circumstances surrounding the whole of the trial have been so helter skelter that I honestly don't think any justice was really being decided in due process. But it certainly makes for good headlines for the White House to commend the actions of a "fledgling democracy" and it's judicial system.

I am glad it's over and hopefully the families he hurt will maybe have some closure. He was treated more humanely than his victims were.

I think the timing was rather poor.  By waiting until after Christmas, instead of holding it in the weeks leading up to Christmas, they missed out on a major merchandising opportunity.  Just think of the market there would have been for a Saddam Hussein Christmas tree ornament.

I think that the crimes he committed were heinous. He was of a different place and they did some things different than those of us in civilized countries but I do think he should be held accountable for having done things the way he did. Many families will forever suffer from the orders of this man.
I do feel pity for him and hope that somehow, some way he was able to realize what he had done to so very many people and ask forgiveness. They say he did not offer words of remorse but in such a setting I can understand but I do hope he did so to God.

Whatever his crimes My personal view is that it was an even greater crime to execute the evil bastad. Please think???? would JUSTICE have been better served by letting this man (monster?) live to be educated and made to face his monstrosities each day of a lifetime gaol sentence? I think that some sad people enjoyed watching the execution but I beg -nay- Implore YOU ALL to think..... Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to the island St. Elba for waging war which led to the deaths of several million people who had NO choice in the matter due to the conscription policy of the regime of the time. Conscription was later adopted by many countries as a means of cannon fodder. So who is the most evil??? We as a so called civilised country, in my view have absolutly NO right to impose whatever passes for our values, upon any other being or country extant.... Evil warmongers sort yer heads out!!!
