  • Absolutely not..Just my opinion.
  • Which Linux? DSL? Fedora? Knoppix? SuSE? Ubuntu? For the most part, I think Vista is a bit of a crap-shoot. It doesn't have any functionality I want or need, and it isn't a mature program yet, so it likely has more bugs than three acres of Amazonian rainforest. Then again, there are a few crappy Linux Distros. Also, WinXP compatibility/portability is an issue as is finding someone who can fix your Linux box when it goes *PLONK*. Vista doesn't really have any problem with WinXP stuff, and most computer repair guys are trained to fix Windows.
  • Yes - for one basic reason - it has no limitations on how you use it. Vista comes packaged with so much DRM and licensing restrictions, it will make your head spin. Vista is actually (on paper) a better OS than XP. But all the limitations Microsoft built in is what's going to kill it. Having said that, the same people who know how to get a Linux distro to do what they want will eventually figure out how to tame Vista as well, if they so desire.
  • Yep, and here are the reasons why. 1. It is free 2. It is more secure. 3. It is more flexible. 4. I have not found anything that I can't do on Linux that Windows does. 5. As far as people say tht getting support for open source software is difficult, try calling microsoft support ;-)
  • Linux allows users to tinker with virtually every part of it .Many of us like that. Not everyone is comfortable with that sort of thing. For them there is windoz and it's quirks, problems, viruses and bloated system.I use a single-core amd system, and it flies with linux.I have no virus or drm issues either.
  • Probably. But the real question is: which one are more than 90 % of the people going to use in 3 years. And the answer will probably be: Vista.
  • Todd..,you hit the nail on the head.Linux, and even Apple for that matter, are far more stable and virus-free.I am sticking with XP for now, but, actually,I rarely use anything except linux.I am constantly auditioning different distros.Linux is very useful and lends itself to all my computing tasks very well.We need to get more people interested.SPREAD THE WORD.TUX ROCKS !!
  • Linux is far superior, its more stable, secure (no viruses) and performs better (even on old hardware). Also most of the so called "new features" are just ripped off from Linux and Mac OS X! Best of all its free!
  • yes, Linux has been and is still is far superior to VISTA or any other MS operating system since 1996. FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, AIX, OpenVMS and MacOSX are also superior to VISTA. Let's face it, Microsoft software is prehistoric, stone age technology that should be wiped from the face of the earth.
  • Its what I run and have been running for years. No virus scanner and no spyware and no firewall installed. I have a router, I sleep well at night. Oh and its free.
  • I think a boozed up monkey is better than Vista--makes more sense, too.
  • Everything is better than Vista. And I've never used Linux. Vista is the OS from HELL.
  • Ya diddly do!
  • Yes, I recently dumped windows totally after a fatal data loss, now running mepis linux and loving the way its so easy to costumize. (plus beryl far out performs vistas GUI)
  • YES. I have been a Unix / Linux fan since the vacuum tube mainframe only days of the 70s and have been writing software for Linux since 1994 ... I have hacked and cracked MS-Windows 98 and rewritten parts of it just for the many MS games that do not like my Linux based MS-emmulators. With Linux, and some programming skills, you can alter your operating system, or just rename many of the system files, making it very difficult for "standard" viruses to find anything to infect, whereas MS has so many "default ONLY" and multiple redundancies that a standard virus can usually find several places to hide and flurish. I actually have a lot of antivirus stuff, firewalls in layers ... etc., etc., but it has been over two years since the last time I had so much as a minor warning with my Linux system ... whereas with my MS-Win-98 system, almost everytime I try to play an online game (even just the checkers game), I get more than just one attempted attack warning, often several per hour.
  • Until it matures a bit, flaming dogshit is better than Vista.
  • yes. its free, and it looks better, better support, better software, but if you aren't too good with computers, then no, stick with windows
  • i use my own version of windows i like to call 95/98SP2/XpSP3 if you know what your doing you can switch things around so it works better than Linux but if you don't then oh well, go with Linux.
  • My personal view on it is they are of two completely different worlds and honestly cannot be compared. Linux is great for tinkerers, can graphically be far more pleasing on the eyes than windows can, can run faster, however is limited by the amount of things i can run natively. Do not mention wine as it is an anomaly and not everything works as it should on it (in fact nothing is perfect on it imo). Windows is great for those people that want to just turn on their computer and get right to it. Not having to install new packages and libraries to get every piece of software running right, not spending 12-13 hours compiling (yes this may not be the same anymore thanks to precompiled binaries and things like apt-get). Windows is the os you want to just relax on and play games imo.
  • of course. free download, no product key to enter, free to change the program, easy program install and upgrade.
  • definately, UNIX based operating system (linux, bsd, Mac) are far far... better than M$. Vista is a crap. In our local language, Vista mean shit. to see the visual effects of vista one has to burn deep deep holes in pocket. to run vista in full spirit one has to get atleast 1gb of ram, graphic card,....etc for LINUX, a normal PC(Even a shitting pc) is fine. with Beryl & Emerald one can get visual effects that are simply too too gud in short what i mean to say is, for scrapy comuting : Vista for power computing : Linux (any distro)
  • well yes linux its better
  • Yes, Linux Mint is so much better. It's easy, quick, nice looking, and FREE.
  • Absolutely!
  • In many ways, DOS 6.22 is better than Vista.
  • yes any thing is better than vista or any windows operating system in my view, Im a Mac user Linux second if I have to then Windows..
  • Only in the same way that a four wheel drive truck is better than a regional bus. BN This response is done on a Linux node. Like Vista a bus must make rounds of its environment. A four wheel drive vehicle can go anywhere so also can a robust Linux distro. Check Out these distros: • Debian • Ubuntu • Knoppix • Gentoo Linux • Mandriva (from UK in multiple languages) • MkLinux is an Open Source from apple. • Slackware Linux Project and about 100 more. Submitted Ed http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html
  • It's not a fair question. Linux is just a kernel, not a full operating system. I will unequivocally say that the Linux kernel is better than the Vista kernel. It has superior memory management, a better scheduler, better process control, and so on. In my experience with both OS', *every* modern linux distibution I have tried was better IMO than Vista- but there are a great many, and some are better than others for some users, especially new users (I'm talking to *you*, Gentoo!)
  • Linux can give provide you with a base to build the OS that caters to your needs, eg video editing. Some people I work with have created some very interesting distro's. Vista costs money, vista ultimate costs more.
  • I like Linux because people rarely use it. Viruses will ALWAYS infect the most popular OS (Windows) and as a Linux fan, I hope Linux always stays rare. Plus, it's free and we have wine.
  • Depends on your needs. I use Linux distros for my everyday computing. I can also use Windows to do that. I adjust many things to my liking in Linux. Can't do that in Windows. I like to play games that require Direct X. A lot less support to do that in Linux. Do I feel like Linux functions better? Yes, because it wasn't created as a way to make money. (Although Windows wasn't either, but Microsoft was) Microsoft is a business, and its main goal is to make money. It tries to appeal to everyone. While, Linux does attempt to do that, a majority of Linux users have better computer skills then the average Windows user. So, to answer your question. No, Linux isn't better than Vista in my eyes. And Vista will never be better than Linux. They both serve a purpose. And I feel like Linux's purpose is better.
  • Even DOS is better than Vista if you ask me!
  • Yes It is free It is more secure. It has no limitations on how you use it.
  • I think a rock with buttons is better than Vista.
  • "It is more secure." That is not necessarily a true statement. CERT identifies quite a large number of vulnerabilites for Linux. http://www.us-cert.gov Windows unfortunately has a bad reputation as being insecure, which is really a myth that started back before SP2 for Windows XP was available and has "stuck" in people's heads ever since.
  • I think so yeagh no virsu i think its also free.
  • To be fair...if you're looking for an OS that is designed to FREEZE or CRASH your system, or open it up to possible viruses--then Windoze BLISTER (Vista) is what you want!!!
  • Well, I think that Linux is better than Windows XP. And I think that Windows XP is better than Windows Vista, so yes ;-) I've used my mother's windows computer once or twice, and I just think to myself "How does she stand it!? The icons on my old 450mhz pentium loaded faster than this, and this computer is a 1600mhz pentium4!"
