One of the most intelligent choices a person can make is not to mix drinking and driving. Options: Designated driver. Taxi. Party at home. Take your sleeping bag to the friend's home where the party is, and stay the night. Many cities have a service that takes you home for free on big party nights like New Year's Eve. Most obvious option: Don't drink.

Long time ago I knew a person who claimed to be able to drive even after drinking. Unfortunately, he doesn't make that claim anymore since he is no longer with us. Please don't drink and drive... or else somebody might be typing that up for you or worst someone you might hurt :( Be safe, get a cab or designated driver if you are going to drink!

I live in a rural area that is expecting poor weather for New Year's. Since my wife and I plan to drink (as do most adult around here), neither of us would be fit to drive even on good roads under ideal weather conditions. Therefore, we will be picking up some champagne and Brie and having our own little celebration at home. I do most of my drinking here for those reasons anyways so it's no real loss to me.
