D-Day isn't short for anything, it's a repetition to make it clear it's about a specific day. An event is planned or expected to occur on D-Day, H-Hour, M-minute, or more generally, T-Time. This is why countdowns you see on TV are sometimes "T minus 2 minutes" - they're referring to T-Time, the time they'd planned for the event.

D-day was the allied invasion of Nazi occupied France in 1944. D-Day is just a nickname, the real name was Operation Overlord.

D-day is a common term used to describe the day in which a specific operation begins. This was used to desrcibe all shore invasions in WWII and in Korea. THe name went beyond the purpose for which it was designed in relation to the operation to liberate Europe on June, 6, 1944 in the public venue because it was such an amazing logistical feat to accomplish. It was and still is the largest military, sea borne invasion ever attempted.

To answer teh second part of the Question, D-day was the operation launched on the coast of Normandy France by British, Canadian, French, and American troops to liberat the European Continent From Nazi Germany. THe Invasion forces were "staged" on their vessels in England (just Across the English Channel from Normandy) and then traveled accross the channel to invade the Coast at and around Normandy, France. Operation Overlod (as it was code named) was not just the capture of the beach as many assume, it was the concept of "breaking out" of the Beach head and pushing hte Nazi forces back across the continent back into Germany.

The D in D-Day actually stands for Debarkation, which meant leaving where you were and going someplace else.
It was about invading not only France but Europe to get a foothold for liberation of Europe and defeat the Nazi's.

It was a code name. People called it 'decision day', 'death day', 'destruction day', and probably many others. It had no real designation. They didn't really know when it would happen until the weather cleared on June 6th.
