the word wicca possibly comes from the german root weik - "to bend," although there are many theories on the origin of the word. gerald gardner popularized the use of the word in the 1950's, but many wiccans trace the root of the religion itself back hundreds of years. some modern wiccans will claim mr. gardner as their founder, or one of his contemporaries, others do not claim a founder at all.

Gerald Gardner is considered the Father of Wicca. However, Doreen Valiente is considered the Mother of Wicca (they weren't married - she was the High Priestess of his coven and she eventually split ways with him not appreciating the way he was leading things) and is the author of many works widely used by Wiccans today (particularly the Charge of the Goddess).

No. Modern Wicca was founded in Europe by Gerald Gardner.

It was founded in the USA by Raymond Buckland.

"Wicca" is a form of the Old English word "wiccian" -- meaning to practice witchcraft. There are some slight mis-derivations -- wicca (in Old English) means 'a male witch,' and wicce means a 'female witch.' Both mean: "wise one."

The actual Old English word for witchcraft was 'wiccacraft.' In modern times it's just called "Wicca" or "The Craft."
