  • That depends. Do you owe back rent? If yes, you should simply pay the rent or try to make a payment arrangement if you cannot afford it right now. If you go to court and fight, you will lose anyway and may be on the hook for attorneys fees. If no, you should fight the case. If you paid everything and have documentation, then I would not even hire a lawyer. Just offer up the proof. If you did not pay everything, but think you have a legal justification for not paying, then I would hire an attorney and get advice on the likelihood of success of your specific defense.
  • pay it unless you can prove you don't it. I tried to rent an apt and got a notice from a place I lived 9 years ago that I owed them money for rent. In Dec. last year I owed them nothing but in Jan. this year I owed money all of a sudden but I had no proof they were wrong..I had to pay it. i had no choice. I am smart enough to know that it didnt' take them 9 years to post that balance and that they just overlooked it the past4-5 landlord requests verification. What can you do? Unless you can prove you don't owe it. you are screwed. Big corporations almost always win in court
