    3-1/2 dozen = (3.5)(12) = 42

    One way is with Roman numerals: 42 = XLII, in which X and L use two matches each, for a total of 6 matches.

    "Three and a half dozen" could be interpreted as
    3 + 6, which is 9. You can make a numeral 9 with 6 matches just like on an LED display.
