Help answer this question below.
If you believed Bill Gates to only possess one dollar it would not seem stupid, just ineffective.
Since no one believes Bill Gates has ever been down to one dollar nett worth, the statement loses all credibility.
Well, if we're all children of God, and He only had one Son, that means that we must all be daughters of God. We're all chicks! Who knew?
Good question.
According the bible, Jesus is God's 'only begotten son', that statement could also be translated 'only child'.
If we're all God's children, then why does the bible give Jesus this special designation?
Apparently, he was the first creation. And the only person that God created by himself. At some point after his creation he worked alongside his father in making all other things.
(Colossians 1:15-17) He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16 because by means of him all [other] things were created in the heavens and upon the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, no matter whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. All [other] things have been created through him and for him. 17 Also, he is before all [other] things and by means of him all [other] things were made to exist,
Because you left out THE KEY WORD. God gave his only BEGOTTEN Son. I am a child of God through adoption.
Romans 8:23
Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons...
Jesus was actually concieved by the Holy Spirit. No one else was ever concieved in this way. And for the record, not everyone is a child of God. Most of the people in the world are children of the devil.
John 8:41b-44
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
In the first "only " refers to a dollar. In the second "only" refers to his son. If you equate a dollar with your only son then no difference.
i hope this is rhetorical and means god is pointless and everything i dislike in this world.
Um, human life is FAR more valuable than a dollar bill. And, His Son was PART of him....why can't we just appreciate the fact that He died for us and get over it?
Bill Gates has more than one dollar. God has only one begotten Son.
I'm not a believer but I can understand the significance of losing your ONLY child. When you have one child you are forever changed into a parent. To lose that child is to lose, entirely, that identity.
If you give away your ONLY dollar, yes you may suffer but your whole identity isn't stripped from you.
"ONLY" is incorrect in the first sentence and a bit nonsensical.
"ONLY" is correct in the second sentence.
The Nicene Creed (from 325 C.E.) proclaims:
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father.
Jesus Christ, God the Son, is the second person of the Holy Trinity.
We may be adopted daughters and sons of God but only Jesus is His begotten son.
With love in Christ.
It seems stupid because only giving a dollar is not going to change anything. Additionally, a dollar, even if it is your only one, is nothing compared to the value of the Son of God. When Jesus gave Himself for us, he suffered untold agony in order to pay for our sins, redeemed us from the fall, and opened the way by which we could all return to live with our Father in Heaven. This is something mere money could never do. So, the value of God's gift to us is worth more than all of the wealth of the world.
"Only" seems stupid in the first sentence because its a lie...the second sentence doesn't seem stupid at all to me because i believe it as the truth
Actually it is. To accuse some supposed all knowing, all powerful being of lowering himself to taking a human being as a wife and producing offspring is pretty silly...though on the second thought, perhaps that's why he gave him away so easily ;). Wow...was Jesus simply just a product of god getting drunk and having a lapse in judgment? Lol.
Is hard cover or leather best for a bible?

Why are bikers outcasts? There is a church in San Bernardino, California that ministers to them. Do 'Christians' reject bikers? Why?

You're reading Bill Gates so loved the poor he gave away his ONLY dollar. God so loved the world he gave his ONLY son. If “ONLY” seems stupid in the first sentence why is it not so in the second?

That's the most obvious answer, but if you think about it, wouldn't God, who is described as omnipotent in the Bible, be able to creating as many 'sons' as he wishes? Or simply keep resurrecting his 'sons'?

That is a very good point, Shade.

So life is like money to you?
by Capt.Lizzie_pirate king_Swann on November 7th, 2008
He did resurrect his son. and if he only wanted the one son then he did create as many sons as he wished.
by micahhenry on November 7th, 2008
Kinda. You spend it, sometimes on stupid stuff you dont need, and then its gone.

TY for your answer Ethelred That's a good logical analysis that confirms that it would be stupid, or nonsense, to apply it to Bill Gates. What about the second part - why is it not considered stupid in the second sentence?
by borasalama on November 7th, 2008
Well, im not the person to ask. Religion means nothing to me.
by DueceGod - doGeceuD on November 7th, 2008
Capt.Lizzie: No, I'm not trying to compare a life to a single dollar at all. It was just food for thought, and I was questioning whether death means anywhere near as much if one could be resurrected at will.
by ShadeZero on November 7th, 2008
if you're restricted in your capacity to generate dollars then the dollar you have is a great sacrifice to part with for somebody else. The question is is/was God so restricted in generating/ taking/ begetting/ adopting (take your pick) sons?
by borasalama on November 7th, 2008
I don't believe that one could be resurrected at will. It was a one time deal, until the end of the world, which we seem to be working towards at breakneck speed these days.
by Capt.Lizzie_pirate king_Swann on November 7th, 2008
I pretty much agree with what borasalama says. But you'd still think that a being as powerful as the god depicted in the Bible would be able to resurrect His sons at will. I'm not trying to offend Christians by trying to make it appear as if Jesus' sacrifice wasn't a sacrifice (heck, if you think about it that's probably one of the biggest sacrifices such a powerful being could make), I just thought it would be a good discussion starter.
