Help answer this question below.

Apparently, to answer 'what?' when someone calls your name, is bad manners, but I heard today that it used to be considered good manners. Can you shine some light on this for me?

    Being raised in southern traditions in was considered impolite to answer "what". Even as an adult I will answer sir or ma am. Mr Bill
