In the northern hemisphere, how does one determine how to name a winter , for example, is winter 2006 the one that started in December 2005 and continued into 2006, or the one that just started and will continue into 2007?

    I get what you mean, so really we have two winters per year, one at the beginning and one at the end of each year and it could be quite confusing. But I don't think there is a right or wrong way because both of your examples are right. I think most people tend to avoid the confusion by just mentioning the month and the year and taking it for granted that people will realise it's winter.
