During the warmer months, the earth absorbs heat from the sun, and then slowly releases it. Because of that, we don't begin to feel the full effect of the decreased sunlight until a few months after the fall equinox, and conversely, we don't begin to feel the full effect of the increased sunlight until a few months after the spring equinox.
