  • I "posh"tulate it being slang
  • "Posh" implies a certain degree of eliteness that those of us who aren't rich enough to wipe ourselves with $100 bills resent out of bitter envy.
  • I never found the word to be insulting, maybe descriptive of something "over the top" but never derogatory.
  • According to the Urban Slang Dictionary: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=posh posh can be used to describe/put down someone who is "putting on airs", i.e. acting like they are richer/more sophisticated/smarter/etc. than people around the "posh" person.
  • I was told that the word posh orignated as an acronym. People who sailed on cruising holidays a long time ago (i.e. pre-Titanic era) always paid more for a cabin that was Port on the Outward journey from UK, and Starboard on the way Home. Port Out Starboard Home. This was due to the better light due to the sunlight or something similar. This would indicate they had more money, and I have never heard it used as an insult. I can see why, but I would tend to use the word Toff rather than Posh.
  • I don't consider being called posh and insult. I'd be really flattered if I was considered posh. But that's because I'm just common as muck.
  • I reject your assertion, madam, on the basis that Victoria Beckham would never associate herself with the word if it were debasing as such. She was, after all, a Spice Girl, and as such, one of the Five Holy Archtypes of Womanhood. (You realize I'm joking, right?)
