its not really a process, more like a list of standards that make something living or not. to be living, it has to: -reproduce -respond to stimuli -take in nutrients -expel wastes (there might be a few more, i just cant think of them at the moment) the above list is a good thing to go by when try to determine if *most* things are living or not. there are some notable exceptions: mules, for one. (mules are a cross between donkeys and horses and are all sterile) viruses, for another.
