Why do people feel the need to point out your physical "flaws" like you didn't know already what you look like?

I have the opposite problem. I point them out and am told to shut up about it. I'm perhaps a little too self critical sometimes. ...and you are lovely. I see no flaws Cherry!

Maybe because it makes them feel better about themselves. They think if they point out someone else's flaws that somehow it will make theirs disappear. I also have known a few people who like to constantly one up others and will point out their flaws just to make them feel superior.
