Hey, dezimae. I’m sure your beliefs are different—I’ve never heard of a “UNITY candle”—but the difference, in our eyes, is the authority involved. Christ has given his modern Apostles the same sealing power given to Simon Peter in Matthew 16:19 (http://scriptures.lds.org/matt/16/19#13), which authority has been delegated to each temple sealer.

So there’s the difference: a traditional ceremony is performed with the authority to wed a couple “till death do [they] part,” “as long as [they] both shall live,” etc.; you could light a million candles, and it wouldn’t give the officiator any more divine authority. A temple sealing, on the other hand, is effectuated by the same Priesthood that God Himself uses to create planets, stars, galaxies, etc.; and thus, it includes the power to bind the marriage forever.

    HTH!

Honey, the seal applies to you not him. He wants to make sure your virginity is sealed for him only

Calling a marriage eternal doesn't make it so.
    That requires authority.
The priesthood is the required authority.
The temple is where we are permitted to use that authority for that purpose.
