If you don't want to wait in lines, mid-morning and mid-afternoon are generally the slowest. First thing in the morning before work there is usually a HUGE rush, and after work similarly. There is also a run on the polls around lunch time.

(I've worked the polls before... this was true at least in my district. The biggest lines were first thing in the morning.)

late morning. The rush at the open ids over and you still feel like you made a difference because some of the results aren't in yet.

Early if your state allows it. The lines are often very long on election day.

It varies with different precincts, but most areas I've seen the lines are shorter in the morning, after a rush when the polls first open. Then lines get longer again in the afternoons and evenings. Of course, morning is the least convenient time for most people who have to work.

    CNN says it's 9 to 11:30 and 1:30 to 4:00.
