We do seem to get a lot of them now, particularly fill in the blanks... 'Saturn is the ____ in our solar system'. I think this has happened because firstly, questions aren't as strictly moderated any more, and secondly, there are a lot more users on AB now, which means that we do attract the bad as well as the good...

No. It's always kind of been that way. I would say that we used to get more homework-type questions posted. Recently, it's been more opinion and "who do you like more" questions.

I think there will always be a small segment of users that post homework questions here.

However, it's not exactly the best way to get people to do your homework for you. You can't trust all the answers, and you can't guarantee that someone will even answer it in time to use the information.

They do. But us adults post our 'home work' problems on here too. No biggie. It's only bad when the askers are being very obviously lazy. Or very crude.

I LOATHE every one of those homework Qs!

THE BIG "tip" is putting the number in front of the Q.

ANOTHER "tip" is the cadence of those homework Qs.

"THE dumbing down of America" - and the world.
How lazy can these little kids be? As lazy as the computers they are working with will let them be.

I THINK they simply scan the homework Qs directly from the textbook and let those of us who KNOW the answers finish the homework for them.

Because they are. I was once given a negative rating because the answer I gave on something to do with the French Revolution was not enough to do a report on the ENTIRE French Revolution that somebody had due the very next day

I have seen plenty of questions that sounded like homework without being so obvious. . .typically (not always) those contain phrases like:

    Name all the reasons. . . .

. . .provide examples to support your answer

I see no harm in getting homework help, but I agree that the specific math questions and such are a bit much.

because some people probably are. This is a web site for answers so I dont find it that inapropriate. If you have a moral objection to helping people with their homework then dont answer the questions. I think it is o.k to ask, If they need help it is up to them how they use the information and if it is just to get them started in their reserch then why not. Ofcourse we will have people that just use it not to do homework, but that is really out of our control and it is on their shoulders.

Not only that, and that really angers me, but the amount of people who would be QUICKER just to f-ing google their question!

Seriously, so many questions would be answered quicker by checking wiki or something than typing in a question here, posting it and waiting for an answer!

Of course. It's very obvious many times. I ignore the questions or point them to one of the online encyclopedias.

Sometimes, yes. When I get that feeling I give a very general answer. This way those pesky kids still have to find their own info. I'm all for offering a little help to get you going in the right direction but I ain't going to write your paper...

Yea. it's going on and we all know it, I don't mind if they actually need some honest help with a question, but I don't want to see them use everyone out here to answer all of their homework questions. I hope they keep it "Legit". I'm cool with it.

I really don't mind people getting help with their homework, it makes a change from others using it to air their political or religious views, and then you've got the "what's your favourite pizza topping" brigade and the "I've found a dodgy pill" team. Although I don't know why the homework kids just don't google. Much quicker and more reliable.

It seems so. And those irritating answers (from new people it seems) where all they have to say is to give a link to the encyclopedia!

I am sorry, but if that's the best they can do, I don't think their answer counts for much unless they preface it first with something else.

I've noticed that, and I have noticed it turning into more of a social site rather than a fact gathering site. Even since I joined here just a few months ago, I've noticed more opinion questions and personal questions (what did you say this morning? Et cetera) popping up more recently.

I don't see how those students are any lazier than those who look the answer up in a book or elsewhere on the Internet...with the obvious exceptions of solving mathematical problems and answers that need to be reasoned, they won't get any more knowledge out of researching the answer in another way...

As for me, I asked a question that is on my problem solving homework. I asked it because I left my textbook CD in my tutors computer. I have looked over my notes from class, but I don't see an example that is similar to the one on the homework sheet. Plus at 52, it's the first time I've had algebra in 38 years! So, if you can help me with an equation, function, or formula like y2*y= I would greatly appreciate it!

    Sincerely,
    Deni

I wouldn't say that the too lazy to do homework types will eventually take over. Having been around since March 2004 I can say that AB is a magnet for lazy students. I was once given a negative rating because the answer I gave on something to do with the French Revolution was not enough to do a report on the ENTIRE French Revolution that somebody had due the very next day (a procrastinator AND lazy). The fill in the blanks are obvious and are now allowed under less stringent moderator guidelines.

I have seen plenty of questions that sounded like homework without being as obvious. . .typically (not always) those contain phrases like:

    Name all the reasons. . . .

. . .provide examples to support your answer

I see no harm in getting homework help, but the fill in the blank queries are a bit much. Next it will be Mad Libs and AB will just flat out become a quiz site. . .the future possibilities just scare me (sigh).
