    The 'correct' expansion of EBITDA remains Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization

    A word of warning about this is in order: EBITDA is not an accepted measure under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

    EBITDA was a favorite measure used by various high-tech start-up companies during the dot-com bubble of the late 1990's; by emphasizing this number in the firms' financial reports, this metric allowed the firms to explain away their not-so-favorable numbers for gross income and net income. That bubble did much to discredit the use of EBITDA in financial reports; by "discredit", I mean that the Securities and Exchange Commission requires a firm's EBITDA to be reconciled to its net income in order to avoid misleading investors.

    As a consequence both of the dot-com bubble and the questionable value of EBITDA on financial statements, EBITDA is sometimes used sarcastically to mean _Earnings Before I Tricked (the) Dumb Auditor_, or words to that effect.
