"Catgut" is a tough thin cord made from the treated and stretched intestines of certain animals, usually sheep, and used for stringing musical instruments and tennis rackets and for surgical ligatures.

In English the term catgut is still used rather misleadingly for the strings of musical instruments. In fact, round about the year 1300, Italian saddlers discovered that the gut from the local wild mountain sheep they used to sew their saddles with was particularly suited for making strings for such instruments. To protect themselves from competition, they concealed the real origin of their strings and claimed they were made of catgut. After the deaths of countless cats people wrongly held to have musical qualities, they came to speak of caterwauling.
