What do two dots on top of a half note mean? Are they played like 4 eighth notes?

    If you had two dots to the right of the half note it would mean lengthening the value of the note. One dot means by half...another dote by 1/4. Two dots = 3/4. For the half note add 3/4 of it value.

    In 4/4
    Half note = 2 quarter notes
    1st dot = 1quarter note
    2nd dot = 1 8th note
    Total= 3 1/2 beats.

    There are never two dots over a half note in the Western Music Theory System. Even one dot over a half note doesn't make sense because a half note gets two beats and that's a long sound. One dot over a note indicates "staccato", which means to play it "short". Plus you never play a half note like 4 eighth notes unless they are all tied with a tie symbols.

    Hmm, well a dot above a note is a staccato, meaning a quick stab of a note and then immediate silence. But being a half-note it lasts two beats. So the only reason I can think of is that the beats per minute is VERY high, ie. the song is very fast.
