Given the size and massive tidal movement of the Atlantic Ocean and the small passage known as the Straits of Gilbralta leading to the Mediteranian sea, why is there not a massive water surge four time a day which in time would erode away the big rock?

You're reading Why is seawater salt? Does it grow salter because of the circulation evaporation, river water entering the sea again?

I'm not a geologist, so I can't give an expert opinion. I don't think volcanism contributes much to the process. Ash fall and acid rain from eruptions on land probably don't affect salinity. Underwater eruptions in the seabed probably don't contribute much, either.
