Why is seawater salt? Does it grow salter because of the circulation evaporation, river water entering the sea again?

    Rain falls as nearly pure water, then returns to the sea by flowing along long routes over land, during which it picks up some dissolved minerals -- salt and other stuff. Since this is an endless cycle that's been going on for billions of years, the oceans have gradually increased in salinity.
