'91 chevy beretta with the 3.1L engine. Runs fine in park, but when I shift into gear it stalls out. I replaced the fuel filter and air filter, checked the spark plugs. Made no difference, any suggestions?

If the car has a 3spd automatic (TH125)...99% chance that it is the torque converter clutch solenoid. I've done 4 of them in various cars. The TH125 is a very reliable tranny, so replacing it should do the trick. How to test it...look on the front (closest to the radiator) driver side of the tranny for a 4 prong plug...this is the TCC plug....unplug it and try the car. If the problem goes away, then you can replace the solenoid or drive it with it unplugged...it WON'T HURT THE TRANNY!! You will suffer on mileage though.

    Good luck!!!!

if you have had a dead battery or the battery unhooked lately the pcm may have lost its idle memory and will need to be relearned, Sometimes this will have to be done with a scan tool under special funtions as driving does not always relearn the idle properly.m Also 65fenderbender is right you may have a torque converter sol. that is stuck causing the torque converter to be locked up all the time. A faulty idle air control motor ( IAC )can also cause this

The torque converter in the transmission may be locked up, causing the engine to stall. If it stalls as though you slid your foot off the clutch in a manual trans. car it might be the problem.
