if your adding or subtracting rational numbers they need to have a common denominator.
when your multiplying you can divide out common factors and then mulitply across.
when dividing two rational numbers you multiply by the reciprical( fraction flipped over ex 2-> 1/2)
if you want you can give me examples and i can show you step by step.
