Question

Help answer this question below.

Anyone else here get what feels like "skipped" or "missed" heartbeats? There can be just one or several in a short period or in a day. I've had it for 25+ years. Dr.'s say it is all quite normal. Some people get it more than others. Just curious.

I get them and have for many years (30 I guess). I have had all the heart checks etc. Worn a monitor for 3 days. All normal. I guess they are caused by alot of things: stress, too much caffeine, fatigue, anxiety, and other things not at all heart related.

I dislike the feeling, because it often also makes my pulse rate speed up for a short time after I get one, but I try to ignore them. My doctor said the more you think about them, the longer I will continue to get them, so I try to distract myself and relax. But it used to be abit scary.

Yeah, I get them. I had an EKG and wore a Holter monitor for one whole day to be told there is nothing wrong with me. The way I describe it is:

The butterfly is not in my stomach, it's in my heart.

Ever since I got FMS about 4 years ago, I am a physical mess. Probably just one of the joys of being sick and getting older.

You could have mitral valve prolapse. I have it, it's nothing major, but it can cause pvc's and a faster heartbeat and some times mild chest pain.I would have it checked out.You can also get skipped beats from anxiety and stress. You may have a panic disorder. Im not a doctor, so I cant really say. Go get checked out!!!

I haven't experienced it myself, but 20 years ago when I was working as a firefighter, I worked with someone who did. He was a 30 year old man, and his heart would skip one to two beats every minute. As an EMT, we would sometimes use each other as practice, and it was always a little amusing to see the puzzled look on a new EMT's face when they used Jimmy as a subject. He was otherwise completely normal and healthy. He is now 50, and still working as a firefighter. It does not appear to have caused any problems with his health.

I experience this all the time. I have random sinus arrhythmia. There are so many things this could be for you. I've had mine checked out over and over, and it's always nothing.

The ones you describe are rather common. I occasionally get them. I think they are called ectopic beats, but I am not entirely sure. On the other hand, a lot of people also have attacks of sinus tachycardia, which is abnormally fast heartbeat due to outside sources of stress. This can feel rather unpleasant and pulse can be hard to keep track of. You can also feel dizzy and unable to function as a result. I have chronic tachycardia, meaning my resting heart rate is somewhere up around 120 bpm.

I get this and for years I thought I had a heart problem, because I do have a heart murmer as well. I'd seen several doctors, none of which reassured me or explained the problem to me except for the last doctor I saw. He showed me the ECG print-out and on it were a series of tall spikes, which are the "skipped" heartbeats. These are completely normal and everyone has them, but not everyone can "feel" them, unlike me and you.

Only 4 people out of the hundreds who watch this Forum daily huh? Well, guess maybe it was a boring question, or maybe others who get these just don't go to their doctor, and of course some people never feel them. They are the lucky ones!

I am 19 and I have these, especialy when stressed. Once it went on for half an hour missing a beat (i think)every 3-5 beats. It's not painful but very uncomfortable and makes you feel a litlle dizzy as the next beat to come is much harder aswel. I am currently undergoing investigations because I do not believe it is normal at all. I am doing medicine and my dad is a nurse and we both believe it is sometimes ocurring too frequently. It is hard to pick up as you must catch the time that it is occuring (and in my case be stressed.) Although, I believe it is not serious, It most probably can cause future problems as having an irregular heart beat is never good. I must admit I don't know much about the heart but I'm assuming this could probably increase chances of other cardiac illneses in the future.

It called atrial Fibulation. Only one in 20 cases are serious enough to require surgery. I was one of those.

I get them all the time several times a day! I hate it. It freaks me out and i hate the feeling. But all the tests that i have had on my heart all come back fine so i guess i am ok. So i will just have to get used to it and learn to live with it. I guess we all have things like this that we must live with!

Nope, never noticed anything abnormal about my heart, though I've been told I have/had a heart murmur.

I have felt what seems like a skipped heartbeat, and then a sudden speedup to catch up occasionally. It usually happens when I am just sitting and doing very little. At least that's when I notice it. I don't notice it happen everyday or anything. I've never mentioned it to anyone, either. I am a relatively healthy 37yo woman.

Its an arithmia. I had a doctor who was a nazi once, and she took an EKG and sent me to the hospital for a week and a half for a minor arithmia (which like half the country gets). What a biz-nitch.

It sounds like palpitations.... you are only in danger if you never have one as it can be indicitive of problems.... it's like a change it pattern.... it skips a beat and catches up... nothing to worry about, it's a good thing!

I have them, but they are part of a larger heart condition. The skipped or missed heartbeats on their own are normally not a problem. It is when they are combined with other issues that they become important. I have a biventricular pacer with an ICD inserted, this regulates my heartbeat and also stimulates my ventricles on each beat. The pacemaker component only kicks in when there is an issue, and it dosn't worry about the missed beats at all. It only paces me if my heart rate drops below or above a set parameter. So I can assure you that the skipped beats are ok, but if you start getting other symptoms of heart problems, then it is time to go back to the Doctors for further tests.
