Actually two teams have done it: the 1890 Louisville Colonels of the American Association and the 1991 Atlanta Braves. The Louisville Colonels finished the 1889 season with a record of 27-111 and were the first team in Major League history to lose 100 games in a season. They won the American Association pennant in 1890 and faced the Brooklyn Bridegrooms in an early version of the World Series. Major League Baseball, however, does not officially recognize this era as part of World Series history. Back to the modern era...the 1990 Atlanta Braves were the worst team in Major League Baseball - not just the worst in the National League - finishing with a record of 65 - 97. The 1991 Atlanta Braves finished the regular season with a record of 94 and 68 then lost the 1991 World Series to the Minnesota Twins in seven games. Interestingly enough, the 1990 Minnesota Twins finished last in their Division but did not have the worst record in the American League. The 1991 World Series is, to my knowledge, the only World Series where two last placed teams from the previous season faced each other in the World Series.
