Question

Help answer this question below.

Why is it that violins do not have printed lines & small dots on either 5ths & octaves or notes or positions of any kind. This would not effect sliding in any way, and if the strings are in tune correctly this would not affect it being out of tune?

The problem has to do a lot with personal preferences in regards to the hight of the bridge. A higher bridge gives better projection while a lower bridge requires less pressure in higher positions. Also, the wood of the instrument expands and contracts with differences in temperature and humidity causing the fingerboard to become slightely longer and shorter and the bridge to become higher and lower. All of this will change the precise location of a note on a string. There are landmarks, if you will, that provide easy navigation. The point where the neck meets the body is a perfect fifth above the open string, the octave and the 16th (octave and a half) are harmonics. As far as playing professionally goes, many conductors want their orchestra's instruments to look as similar as possible so that no one instrument stands out. Any decoration no matter how slight can stand out on stage and detract the listener from the music.

    Hi its me (the person who asked the question), nobody gets enough space to write everything in the question box, anyway;
    These are my views.
Bowed stringed instruments I believe should benefit the wellbeing and standards of civilisation if they had printed lines on them.

    1. If you train your ear very hard to TUNE your violin then this would not effect by any means the "in - tune" of any printed lines.

    2. My suggestion is to put not just lines but small & possibly dark yellow dots on the fifthes and octaves (perhaps two smaller double dots alongside for an illustration of an octave). And the printed lines to distinguish and determine the remanining semitones. i.e. there may be six or seven printed lines between each dot or double dot.

    3. See frettedviolin.com - see exactly what I mean - except I do not suggest frets as such that stick out which can indeed affect the quality of sounding and moving/shifting hand positions. I suggest to have these lines printed on (very thin but clear lines) but use small dots and double dots on the fifths and octaves only (unlike what the frettedviolin.com picture has - it has a dot after about another 3 frets after another dot).

    4. Multi bowed string instrument manufacturers, learners and buyers could all agree to have this, there is nothing at all to stop them.

    5. I'd just like to reinforce - you can still train your ear to tune the violin correctly in terms of the strings and having these lines and dots on would have no effect on the "being in or out of tune" if they are printed on with accuracy after the manufactuers have made them spot on in tune firstly espacially with computer assistance.

    6. I'll give you an anology (meaning an associative example similar to this problem) - try measuring anything with a blank ruler/ or tape strip. How long would it take to learn and feel that!!!

    7. People may say to train and learn by ear - why do that when you can just train your ear to tune the bowed string instrument and learn the mathematical/logical methods of the notes on the fingerboard. Again I reinforce a third time that if the violin is in tune then this will certainly not affect whatsoever the "in-tune sound" of the lines and dots if they are well made carefully after the instrument(s) is/are in tune especially with computer assistence accuracy within the manufacturing factories.

    8. I believe that everything should be able to be learnt theoretially in music - but creativity can be accomplished after and through learning the theoretical principles. - e.g. It is great to learn to be creative in drawing and/or painting - but how can you draw or paint until you know how to hold the blinking thing.
You can be creative in building houses with bricks - but until you know how to make one brick layerment you cant move on.
    Do you see my point.

    9. Trying to play the violin without frets is no different from touch typing as far as I am concerned or typing with no letters on.

    10. As a conclusion - we as a poeple could make a new string era if the manufactuers manufactuerd these kind of things - if fact I dont see any reason why music colleges and schools should have an enforced rule to use my suggestion of instrumental assistence and keeping this permenent throughout the decades and generations.
Having this suggestion of mine would make things easier by far - all we need to to is get everybody togetehr and just do it-manufactuers, buyers, learners, players etc. Take them to schools, music colleges, performences. Let this be known just like a fassion idea (which spreads so quickly to people).
When things become polular theres no telling what it can accomplish.

Final part of conclusion - having this suggestive idea on bowed stringed instruments would make learning - playing, and civilisation to a much higher standard and increase the wellbeing of learning. one of the reasons why a lot of young people are into the so called modern music which can sometimes be not so nice is because these stringed instruments are far too difficult for them .This idea of mine can certainly improve the interest and civilisation.
    FINI.
