  • None, unless you want it to have heartworm, or some other life-threatening illness.
  • Dogs don't "need" raw meat, and further, most of the raw meat you are able to get (unless you're a hunter) is likely to have bacteria that could be harmful to your dog. The American Kennel Club has recommendations on feeding dogs, and also points out that vegetables are good for dogs. http://www.akc.org/public_education/nutrition_feeding.cfm
  • I dont think you are supposed to give a dog raw meat. Feed him dog food instead.
  • I think raw meat should be handled with extreme caution. By "handled" I don't mean the way you hold it: I mean the way you use it. There can be bacteria in raw meat that can make your dog very sick, even kill it. Any time a person is interested in deviating from the standard pet food, they should do some serious research to make sure they're providing the right diet. Asking a question on AB isn't the kind of serious research I mean. I think, unless you're interested in putting the time and effort into checking with reliable sources and planning your dogs meal's, stick with a high quality commercial dog food. Good luck!
  • Read this, you be the judge. http://www.petplace.com/dogs/raw-meat-debate-should-you-feed-it-to-your-dog/page1.aspx
  • If you are feeding the BARF diet, then a larger proportion should be bone and not meat. The amount vary according to what it is and what activity and breed your dog is. Here's a quote from the page just below on how to figure out amounts: How much do I feed daily? Billinghurst recommends 60% RMBs and 40% veggies, etc... however; 60% to 75% CAN BE RMBs and the rest should be a combination of veggies, organs (also known as offal, to include liver, heart, kidney, green tripe, etc...), ground meat (e.g. lean beef, chicken or turkey), eggs and supplements. If you are just starting BARF, remember to start slow by adding new food items every few days or even weeks, until your dog gets used to the new food (especially the richer foods like liver). This is only a guide to help get you started. If your dog is on the skinnier side, up the food (RMBs) and reduce the veggies....if your dog is on the heavier side, reduce the RMBs and up the veggies. To know if your dog is 'just right,' rub the back of your hand.....his/her ribs should feel the same. If you can't feel his/her ribs, then reduce the daily food intake. Multiply your dogs weight by 16 to get the number of ounces he weighs. Multiply that by .02, which gives you 2 % of his body weight. Multiply that by .6 to give you the weight of RMB you should feed. That is chicken necks, wings, backs etc. Go back to the 2% of his body weight again and multiply that number by .4 to get the weight in ounces of vegetable patty mix you should feed. For example: One of my Boxers weighs 70 Lbs. Here's the formula I used to calculate the daily food intake when I started: 70Lbs x 16 = 1120 ounces 1120 x .02 = 22.4 ounces of food per day 22.4 x .6 = 13.44 ounces of RMB -----60% RMB 22.4 x .4 = 8.96 ounces of Veg. Patty mix.-----40% Veg. Patty mix. Remember this is only a place to start - adjust everything up or down, depending on your dogs condition. This page has great info about BARF as we feed it: http://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm Here's a general page that describes the BARF diet and something they sell to feed dogs; http://www.barfworld.com/html/barf_diet/barfdiet_specific.shtml I'm glad that you are considering feeding a natural diet, but please do research to find out how to do it in a good balanced way. Kibble is really bad for dogs. Dogs can digest corn or soy or wheat. They need bones and meat and offal. Meat really doesn't need to be handled so carefully for dogs. Raw is a dog's natural diet and is very safe for dogs. We've fed raw for many years and have never had a problem. We feed raw meaty bones and a little meat from many types of animals. The only ones we give extra care to is pork and salmon which both must be frozen first before being fed. Other than that, it's safe for dogs or cats.
  • Feed your dog aproximately 400g of raw meat a day...everyday meal should be mixture og 60% raw meaty bones,20%muscle meat..or organs,20%veggies..add white plain yougurt is good too...works as probiotics...i also use kelp powder, salmon oil, wheatgerm, powder milk for dogs...this bring 100% daily nutritions they need...i also feed vitamin E in capsule once a day...
  • As much as he wants, as long as he doesn't get too chubby? As much as you can afford? As much as you want to, provided he eats his veggies first? Ours do like their carne "au tartare" but they really seem to prefer it a bit seared. I guess you don't believe Alpo is The Best just because the company says it is, or that dog food that pet food companies are making premium dollar on is necessarily best for your dog. Good for you. Also, I like to ask a dog "Would you like to sit?" when we're out walking and someone comes up. It puzzles people who insist you show the dog you're the boss -- especially when the dog sits, immediately.
  • None, raw meat contains germs, bacteria, worms eggs, and loads of other diseases.
  • Anyone that says you shouldn't give a dog raw meat is crazy and thinking of dogs as if they were human. Dogs have specific enzymes in there stomachs that prevent them from getting sick after eating raw meat. It's natural for them to eat raw meat! I bet that these same people who say "feed your dog dog food" don't even know how wolves eventually became domesticated dogs. Dog food for the most part is meat by product, rotted meat which in the wild dogs wouldn't eat and recycled dogs and cats that were put to sleep and grains that dogs don't digest. You ever notice all the advertisements at the Vet for dog food now compare that to every commercial you see for a drug that tells you to ask your doctor for a free trial....and then you hear all the side effects. Dog food is big business that and vets pimp that shit! If you love your dog and want it to live a long and healthy life go RAW
  • If you are going to feed raw meat, you will need to supplement with vegetable matter to get a balanced diet for your dog. In the wild, canines are omnivorous and will eat fruit and vegetable matter in addition to the stomach contents of their prey. Talk to your vet to make sure your dog is getting the proper nutrition.
  • I've had TWO vets say NOT to feed raw meat to a dog ... It will make them KILLERS as well as mean around people and kids ...
