  • An interesting topic would be to compare the different types of autism. People think that it is one disease. You can highlight the ones primarily that effect males vs females, etc.
  • Maybe discuss the differences between autism and Aspergers (as mentioned by Qwiigle). Also, the fact that a lot of autistic people have a topic which they're obsessed by and which they know a huge amount about. E.g. pop music, a specific football team, criminal law...it could be absolutley anything.
  • Go to your local library and take a look at the table of contents of several general books about autism. Don't read the whole book.
  • I find Temple Grandin fascinating. She has autism and a Phd. She has totally reformed the slaughterhouse industry so that animals don't have to die in terror, and she says she is able to understand how cattle think because her brain works like theirs.
  • Don't know too much about this but there's some controversy right now about it. Jenny McCarthy's son has/had autism but now she claims to have cured him. Maybe you could write something about the controversy and difference of opinions about it.
  • Perhaps you can look into why it is that the media never seems to portray autism properly. A lot of the time people who don't know the difference think that the news report is talking about ADHD (which may be the reason talk show host Michael Savage said kids with autism were nothing more than "spoiled brats"). Every news report seems to just show the kid running around, doing regular things, but never the handicaps of the condition.
