Sometimes, dark circles under the eyes can be caused by consuming too much caffeine. If you are a big coffee, tea or cola drinker, try cutting back on those drinks. Additionally, sometimes the hormones in birth control or HRT pills can cause dark circles under your eyes. If this is a concern for you, talk with your OB-GYN.

If you find that your face and eyes are also puffy, look at your diet to see if you are eating or drinking things that increase water retention (adema). The biggest culprit is excessive sodium (salt) in the diet, which can be difficult to combat because so many of the processed foods we eat today are very high in sodium. Fast foods, in particular, contain way too much sodium for a health diet. Look at the labels of the foods you eat to see the Percent RDA of sodium they contain. Try to keep your daily, cumulative consumption of sodium at or below 100% of the RDA (2,400 milligrams). Another thing to be cautions of is diet sodas and foods that use NutraSweet (Aspartame) artificial sweetener. Aspartame is an antidiuretic, which means it encourages water retension in your body. Cutting back on your consumption of aspartame will reduce adema in your body.

Additionally, you can try sleeping with your head elevated a bit more. Try a plumper pillow or use a foam wedge to raise your head and shoulders a bit while your sleep. Be careful that you don't use a pillow so large that it causes neck cramps.

Two traditional folk remedies for puffy eyes can also help if you have a few minutes to spare: place cold cucumber slices, or cold wet tea bags (regular black tea) over your closed eyes, recline in a comfy chair for 20 minutes and relax. But don't expect terribly dramatic results from these techniques.

Another way to reduce puffy eyes is to sleep on your back at night. Also, when you wake up, your room temperature should not be hot- a slightly cooler temperature will reduce puffiness
