The concept of the slam dunk had been around for a while but players didn't dare try it in a game because if they did, opposing players would undercut them. Trying to find the first person to slam dunk a basketball is difficult to do so stating who the first person to come up with the concept is nearly impossible. Los Angeles announcer, Chuck Hern, coined the term "slam dunk" (in 1972). Prior to that it was referred to as a "dunk shot" (circa 1961). The NBA credits George Mikan as the first person to dunk the basketball, although he rarely did so in a game. (Watch video) However, this is contested by some stating that Bob Kurland (who was one of the first two big men to play, along with Mikan) was the first person to slam dunk the basketball. http://www.planetpapers.com/Assets/3753.php My guess is that it's one of these two players.
