  • This same sentiment is held by a surprising number of those voting for Obama. That is how.
  • idk... maybe she's referring to the racial injustices many feel they didn't deserve?
  • Maybe she's talking about the different things that black women in general face from racism, to sexism and how having barack a black man probablly give her proof, like me proof, and a lot of black people proof that America might be changing fo the better.
  • I agree with her except that I'm still not proud of this country, particularly, this year
  • What do you expect, her socialist husban is running for president.
  • Because America isn't perfect. Anyone who thinks that should think again or try getting off those hard drugs their into. America has taken too long fix issues regarding race and predhudice and class. It also isn't seen in the best light with other countries, and with good reason (for certain people). America has alot of things that need to be fixed, and maybe, recently, she feels like it started to make progress (or speed it up). I can get a handful of American citizens who would agree. Try seeing it from a different person's point of view. Someone who is dirt poor and isn't recieving money, someone who watch the enviornment being torn to shred, someone who watched certian people get treated poorly due to the color of their skin, someone who's wtached a rape or hatecrime go unnoticed. America isn't perfect and I think thats what she means.
  • you can't justify that. It's just another reason they should be kept out of the white house
  • Michelle Obama isn't one to withhold her opinions or take back her own words, but on Wednesday she did clarify a remark that kicked up a tiny flap earlier this week. On Monday, the wife of presidential candidate Barack Obama told an audience in Wisconsin that, "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country” because voters are hopeful and ready for change. In an interview with WJAR-TV today, according to the Associated Press, the would-be First Lady said she said she was trying to express pride in how Americans are engaging in the political process right now. She also said she’s proud of the country and wouldn’t be where she is if not for its possibilities. She’s really proud at this moment because for the first time in a long time, thousands of Americans who’ve never participated in politics before are coming out in record numbers to build a grassroots movement for change."
  • Right. I'm all for being patriotic. I like my country, I like being able to say where I'm from, and our history and stuff. But I don't understand how some Americans are so bloody patriotic to the point that they think their country is perfect. And refuse to criticise it. And take everything so incredibly seriously. I've never seen anything like it. Anyway, I don't know. Maybe because that was just how she felt. Why should she even have to justify herself?
  • Are you really criticizing a fellow American for voicing their opinion about our government? Seriously?!? So, in your summation, we should just be keeping our mouths shut and saluting the flag and singing the Star Spangled Banner all day long? Anyone who thinks that our country does not have its fair share of problems is fooling themselves. We have a government that defines the term opaque, we have an administration that defies and disregards public opinion, and we have created a culture that the majority of the world absolutely despises. Yet we stare at our television screens and warm up our hot pockets like nothing is going on! America is changing, my friend, right before your eyes. And there is a large swath of Americans who think that it isn't for the better. We need someone who will change this new direction we're heading in very quickly, not blindly carry us into oblivion on the back of some nationalist rhetoric and blind patriotism. If you want to mindlessly salute our flag, go ahead. Your not doing your country or your countrymen any favors. If you want to stand up for democracy and make a change from this pseudo-patriotic downward spiral we're headed, then realize that what she says might have a smidgeon, just a small inkling, of truth behind it and it's worth a little exploration. THAT, my friend, would make our founding fathers proud. Not sitting there criticizing another fellow American who is questioning their government.
  • That was a mistake that she will have to try and live down.
  • Great question. As far as I am concerned you cannot justify the unjustifible.
  • America seems heartless in many ways but it's not usually the sort of thing that many would say to curry favour with an audience. How she would justify saying it I've no idea
  • How does John McCain justify this comment while he was a POW, wearing a uniform and supposedly defending the country he did not love? So said by him!!!
