How do I open a DAT file (sent as an attachment to an email) with Vista?

    Right-click it.
    Select "Open with..."
    Choose "Notepad."

    .dat files are different depending on the program that created them. For example, my virus-checker will attach a .dat file to any message with an attachment that is basically a .txt fie that tells you "This message was scanned and is virus free."

    However most .dat files are text of some form or another and notepad should give you an idea which program to use to get the best out of the file.

    "If you want to view the winmail.dat file and see the message, there are programs that decode the file and allow you to view it. Listed below you will find some of these programs.
