Help answer this question below.
There are many variations on the superstition and the explanations. Most of the origins have to do with the reflection in the mirror representing the soul and the soul being damaged in the breaking. It is unclear whether the bad luck follows directly from damage to the soul, or whether the soul is less capable - in its damaged state - of defending the breaker from misfortune.
Many Romans believed every person was remade new every seven years. So if the damage was done to your soul today it would take seven years to be undamaged. Given the Romans beliefs regarding the role of their immortal self in defending their mortal life, it is at least likely that they believed their soul was less capable of defending them.
In some forms, the superstition predates the Romans. It even predates breakable mirrors, all the way back to scrying pools. So this is one very long-lived superstition.
According to ancient beliefs, a mirror reflected the entity of your soul and when you stare at a mirror, you stare not only at your physical body, but your soul as well. When you break a mirror, you are basically "breaking your soul" and therefore, condeming yourself to 7 years of bad luck while your soul tried to repair itself and return to your body.
It does not gives us bad luck. It's us who think that it gives us bad luck
Superstition and folklore deal with mirrors A LOT. They are used for conjuring. They are used to foretell the future. ... etc. The mirror was once thought to be a portal into the spirit world (restless spirits and demons; not heaven). Breaking a mirror would unleash restless and evil spirits previously trapped by the mirror. Before mirrors existed, there were other such portals that should not be disturbed.
I don't believe in that,it's just a superstitious belief. XD
Im not sure... Ive never broken one but Ive had well over the 7 years bad luck lol
i dont know. but i swear its true.
If it's someone elses mirror, they you've gotta come up with the bucks to buy em another one...! I'd call that bad luck... ;-)
Ok Ill rephrase and answer my question. I meant, "Why is it believed to be bad luck to break a mirror?". And the answer is that the Romans believed that mirrors had the power to capture part of your soul. Therefore, broken mirror means broken soul. The Romans also believed that the body renewed itself every 7 years and so it would take 7 years for your soul to become whole again. In the meantime you wouldn't have a soul to protect you from spiritual evil and negativity and so would have 7 years of bad luck and unfortunate events.
Of course it isn't true, a mirror's a mirror and a soul is debatable.
because it's bad luck you have to part with money to buy another, if you have to. no other reason.
Apparently it takes seven years for your soul to come back because of the seperation of your soul and it being broken, then some people think if you take a picture you are stealing their soul talk about being the devils advocate.
It's a bad reflection on you.
If you break your reflection it was said that you break a part of yourself.
It's not..I break mirrors constantly and have since I was a kid..No bad luck..I also jumped on every crack I could find..that b#tches back never broke..all old silly superstitions :)
There are also a number of rituals which are said to counteract the bad luck created when you break a mirror. The entire mirror should be ground into dust. No reflection, no problem. Otherwise bury the pieces under a tree during a full moon. African slaves believed the bad luck could be washed away by placing the pieces in a river flowing in a southerly direction.
Several years back I was in a small bar and found myself helping a handicap gentleman in the restroom with hes wheelchair. As I was helping him around a corner the chair caught the corner of a mirror, it broke and down it came. I put out hand to shield the the dude in the chair and it nearly cut my thunb off. Broken mirror...Bad luck!?!? You decide.
I don`t know why, but in Russia we say it`s for the death.I trust in it, because my grandmother died after the mirrow was broken.Maybe it`s not because of it, but I prefer not to break any mirrow ever
Anyone know Hhw can you reverse the bad luck? Throw Salt over the shoulder?
No, but it is bad luck to break the mirror in the first place - especially if it's expensive!
I beleive in the 7 years of bad luck...My husband broke a mirror in the shower 2 years ago and wa had bad luck ever since. We had everything going for us.
Now, everything is going wrong: my husband lost his job, my business is going bad, my son broke his arm, we are about to lose our house...I don't know how to reverse it now, I think it's too late...I don't have the pieces anymore. Is there something to do??
If your superstitious it is yes. I broke a mirror a few years ago and I believe I had bad luck from then on...I still can't remember if my "time's" up or not. Hopefully it is.
It's a superstition with no founding. Many mirrors have been broken in my house and no bad luck has come upon me or my family. And if something bad DID happen after a mirror getting broken I wouldn't put it down to the mirror but down to coincidence. Don't get hooked on believing these old superstitions. You'll end up in a mental hospital.
it sees you as broken
well i dont think its bad luck, i accidently broke a mirror and i havent gotten bad luck :/
i guess it happens if you are a believer but i dont quite believe in all that
No, but to cut yourself with the shardes is very bad
