I agree that you should try your best to spell correctly. Use spell check and proof read what you wrote before hitting send. I sometimes type in Microsoft word first and then copy and paste into my e-mail or answerbag. Microsoft word checks your spelling and grammar as you type. I still make mistakes, like typing you instead of your and other stuff like that.

I have a friend that sends me e-mails and her spelling and grammar is so bad I often don't have any idea what she is talking about. I finally said something to her. I didn't want to hurt her feelings, but I just ask if she ever used spell check. I know she has an at home business and she uses e-mail for it and I can't imagine people getting her e-mails and not thinking she is totally stupid.

A small spelling mistake is normal, I make them all the time, but when the spelling is so bad that every other word is wrong, it should be fixed or deleted. A very poorly spelled question makes it nearly impossible to search for it on the site and makes both the asker and AnswerBag look silly. I understand not eveyone has great spelling and typing skills, but there is no excuse for not using a spell checker.

Along these same lines. TypeSpeak has no place in questions. You can use that when chatting with your friends on a phone, but here you have a keyboard and everyone is seeing it. It should be easy to read and to the point.

An occasional typo is fine and understandable. When a question or answer is completely riddled with misspellings in every word, that can make it difficult to understand. Sure, people figure out grossly misspelled questions with effort, but why should they put more effort into understanding it than you (general you, not the poster of this question) put into writing it? It's up to the questioners to make their questions as clear and easily understandable as possible.

I suppose you can turn that around and say that it's up to the questioner to also put forth the effort to try to decipher poorly-spelled answers, but I don't understand why someone would go to the effort of getting a complete and correct answer and then write it in gibberish spelling. It makes me feel they have no pride in their work.

One great mind on my country once said that language's function is to communicate and as long as you're communicating language is being used the right way. My opinion is that those of us who are capable of following the grammatic, syntactic and other rules have to make an effort to do so and hence contribute to preserve the language

THIS IS MY ORIGINAL ANSWER, BEFORE I COMMENTED ON ANYTHING. I DO NOT THINK I WAS BEING CRUEL, OR OUT OF LINE....

    Which Spelling thing?

My father could add and multiply faster than a calculator, but couldn't spell a 4 letter word.

I'm a good speller, but a lousy typist, so often LOOK like a bad speller.

Also, you'll see many times that a website or published text LOOKs ameturish simply because in this computer age, with no need to search out a Dictionary, spellcheck at your fingertips, there really isn't much excuse to appear ignorant. It measures into perceptions.

And man, have I heard people say things about spelling [OK, my kids- because of school].

One had a VERY NICE, SWEET teacher, and every note she ever sent home was misspelled. I Wouldn't have cared except the kids were in 3rd grade- not high school, and she was teaching them? High school, it doesn't affect the kids. She was showing my kids that spelling wasn't important, or ???

She may have been dyslexic- don't know. She marked an awful lot on their schoolwork 'correct' that was absolutely wrong too. Oh well, sure did like her. Sweet and patient.

i think if you can spell reasonably well you should continue to do so, although when texting on mobiles mis-spellings are deliberate for quickness. Sometimes something can be mis-read because of a spelling mistake. Just do your best thats all!

    I agree.
There are many out there who quit school to help their mothers, fathers, (one or both) out financially.. some are slow learners.. many have families to support and less time to spend learning in other areas.. The net is a GREAT tool to help people LEARN .. let's not knock them down when they are trying to stand. We all fall short in SOME area in life. All of us. Lend a hand not a punch.

It does not take long to proofread your questions. If it does not make sense to you then it probably does not make sense to many others as well. Of course the bad spelling doesn't get to me as much as the bad grammar (there are many questions I passed up simply because the grammar was so bad I couldn't understand what they were asking) and the type speak. It might have a place when you are using instant message or texting someone, but you should spell things out on a site like this one. But back to the spelling, I know not eveyone is a great speller or typer but it does make you look quite a bit more intellectual when you do spell things correctly.

I may be a little stricter than most when it comes to spelling, grammar and all-caps, but honestly we should be a little more concerned than we have been when it comes to appearing literate and intelligent.

I hate it when people type LiKe THis and do weird shit. Not to mention saying "lyke ya" and "fo sho" and stuff like that, its irritating.. even when spoken. Sometimes I cant even understand the person. I prefer the basic english and spelling of things.

I agree I don't think it matters ignorance or not! I had to quit school in the 9th grade to raise my baby sister because of family issues and my mother could not do it. I had to get a job to take care of us and I had to act as if I had a baby all on my own. I tried going to collge, but couldn't afford that, plus day care, plus the time to do homework and go to school. I now have two children of my own and all of my kids have turned out great and are doing great in school. Who cares If I can't spell every word, or do every math problem given to me. I have a great family and that's all that matters to me. SOrry if that is Ignorant to you!
