  • I'm sorry to say that this wonderful breed has a higher incidence of cancer than most dogs. One type of cancer called histiocytosis, seems to cause most of the deaths in Berners. It seems to be inherited and I know that all respectable breeders are working hard to get rid of this disease that can cause early death, from their bloodlines. It's also found in Flat coat Retrievers. But about 25% of all cases are Berners. There is no known treatment. If one of your dogs comes up with it, it's vital that all cases be reported back to the breeder so the information can get back to the Berner Club cancer study.
