I think it is a good thing. That way people don't have to go into debt using credit cards. Wish I had one near me. I have a Wallie World, but those idiots took theirs away. Imagine that.

It's not a new idea. But it is a good one. And a financially responsible choice. It beats hell out of maxing your credit cards. Pick your item(s), put your money down and pay until you're done. If you find something else, get your money back. It works.

No. You have a deposit tied up for a couple months and then when you finally pay for the stuff, you just end up with Kmart junk. Remember what Rainman said: Kmart sucks.

It is an interest free way to make payments on something without losing any money if you back or a great way to get something that might not be there in a few months but just dont have the cash now for it!!

Layaways were the best thing invented. Too bad more stores don't have this, they probably would make more money.

Layaway is a good idea if you can't control your spending and a bad idea if you can.

If you don't have the discipline to tuck away money every month then you have to use this type of mechanism... unfortunately if you are this point you may already be in some financial trouble.

If you can control spending, this is a bad idea. For example you buy a $100 item. You give KMart the item to lay away. Your first payment is $25 (20% downpayment and $5 service fee) . Then for the next 8 weeks you make payments of $20 each week. At the end you just paid $105 for an item that cost $100. Also in 8 weeks that item may go on say (since it would be close to Christmas) to say $90... so basically you overpaid for an item. Also if you decide to cancel the lay away.. say on the second payment, you have to pay a $10 cancellation fee. So KMart has $15 of your money ($5 service fee and $10 cancellation fee) and you get nothing in return.

If you control your spending just put away $20 each month and at the end you have $100. Then if you change your mind on that item or the price goes down you still have $100
